STRIVE in the Horn of Africa
Strengthening Resilience against Violent Extremism (STRIVE) is contributing towards increasing peace, stability and inclusive economic opportunities for youth and marginalised areas of Kenya by undertaking research and activities to reduce radicalisation and recruitment:
- Research – The research component will contribute towards improving CVE programming and enhancing understanding of the relationship between underlying conflicts/dynamics and recruitment patterns.
- Law Enforcement training – In support of Kenya’s National Strategy on CVE, senior and mid-level law enforcement managers from a range of agencies, and working in high risk areas will be trained in CVE.
- Youth mentorship - The mentorship and women stakeholder referral system aims to reduce the readiness of at-risk youths to engage in political and ideological violence by referring these individuals for mentorship.
- Preventive communications – Communications will seek to inform CVE policy and practice, support the mentorship programme by strengthening the voice of the youth and enhance government preventive communications.
During a previous phase STRIVE tested different types of Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) interventions including inter and intra-faith relationship-building; community media support; training of law enforcement; activities for young Somaliland diaspora; and youth mentorship. STRIVE focuses work on locations where reported recruitment into violent extremist organisations is highest and designs its activities in response to the unfolding trends of violent extremism in Kenya.
STRIVE in Afghanistan
STRIVE Afghanistan is funded by the European Commission through the Instrument Contributing to Stability and Peace (IcSP) and aims to reduce the vulnerability of ‘at risk’ populations in Afghanistan to recruitment into violent extremist groups. Led by RUSI Terrorism and Conflict research group, the project runs January 2019 to mid 2022. The objectives are to research, pilot and measure a variety of interventions which reduce recruitment and to increase the Afghan government’s capacity to understand and effectively respond to such recruitment. Project deliverables include research and data collection, training and capacity building and innovative community-based mentorship programmes and communication initiatives.
